World War

I promised my mother I would have more degrees than daughters,
More certificates than sons.
Being the first soldier of my kind to break barriers of oppression
From African boy, warpaint, and wet back.
Can you not see I am fighting for my fathers?
Pincel in one hand paperbacks in the other
I am prepared for my world war.
The first to shatter ignorance and insanity
To be me...
But still represent them with this integrated skin.

Hello I am Carlotta from little rock
Sacagawea from Shoshone
Diane Nash freedom riding my way into your classroom,
Your college, your top dollar paying interview-
And I have read every book, aced every test, debated every rebuttal and beat every odd.
So whats your answer?
Will you have me?

Would it help if I told you I am part man and they are all waiting on your answer.
